The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Republic of Finland to strengthen cooperation in digitalisation, innovation, and economic development.
The agreement was signed in Abuja by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, and Finland’s Under-Secretary of State for International Trade, Jarno Syrjälä.
According to a statement by the minister’s media aide, Isime Esene, the MoU provides a framework for collaboration in key areas such as digital government, emerging technologies, digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, innovation ecosystems, and capacity building.
Tijani described the agreement as a major step towards deepening bilateral relations and building a more inclusive, innovation-driven digital economy. He noted that the partnership would open up new opportunities for both countries, leveraging digital transformation as a driver of sustainable growth and shared prosperity.
The minister added that the agreement builds on earlier engagements held in Helsinki, where discussions focused on digital infrastructure, data exchange platforms, and potential Finnish participation in Nigeria’s Project BRIDGE initiative.
On his part, Syrjälä expressed Finland’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria, describing digitalisation as a tool for empowering citizens, fostering trust, and creating innovation opportunities. He noted that Nigeria remains a key partner for Finland in Africa and that the agreement would enhance cooperation between both countries’ governments, institutions, and private sectors.
He added that the partnership would support the development of secure, resilient, and people-centered digital systems that are adaptable to future needs.
The MoU is expected to drive advancements in Nigeria’s digital economy while promoting innovation and economic growth through strengthened international collaboration.
