The National Police Council has unanimously confirmed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this after the council’s meeting held at the State House, Abuja. He stated that the council unanimously endorsed Disu’s appointment as IGP.
The meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, commenced shortly after President Tinubu arrived at the Council Chamber at about 2:15 pm. It was convened in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Police Council to consider and approve the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.
The Presidency had earlier indicated that the council would meet to formalise Disu’s appointment following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. In a previous statement, Onanuga said the President would convene the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment before transmitting his name to the Senate for confirmation.
The Police Council is chaired by the President and comprises the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General of Police.
Among those who attended the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack, as well as several state governors and ministers.
Disu, 59, had been serving in an acting capacity since his appointment last Wednesday following Egbetokun’s resignation. Although the former IGP cited family reasons for stepping down, reports indicated that he had been summoned to the Presidential Villa prior to his resignation.
