Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has said he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu fails to secure re-election in the 2027 presidential poll.
Okpebholo made the declaration during a Friday interview on African Independent Television, where he tied the performance of his administration in Edo State to the success of the federal government under Tinubu.
The governor dismissed suggestions that his comment was political grandstanding, describing it as a firm endorsement of the president’s leadership and policies. He said the developmental strides recorded in Edo reflect the broader direction of the federal administration.
Expressing confidence in Tinubu’s chances in the state, Okpebholo said ongoing infrastructure and social development projects would influence voters in 2027. According to him, Edo residents would show appreciation for the president’s leadership through their votes in the next general election.
He stated that the various projects executed across the state would speak in favour of the president at the polls and insisted that Tinubu would win in Edo. He added that if the president fails to secure victory in the state, he would step down as governor.
Okpebholo also described himself as a grassroots politician, saying his style of politics is not rooted in violence but in community engagement.
