The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called for calm, dialogue and adherence to the rule of law following the arrest of Tracy Ohiri in a dispute reportedly involving the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
In a statement issued on Friday, Akpoti-Uduaghan urged restraint amid heightened public interest in the matter, which has generated widespread debate on social media. She thanked Nigerians who spoke out over the development, describing civic vigilance as vital in a democracy.
The senator condemned any attempt to use force or intimidation to silence individuals, particularly women who raise concerns about alleged harassment or misconduct. She emphasised that no one should be subjected to coercion for speaking out.
Akpoti-Uduaghan appealed to Umahi to engage Ohiri in good faith and resolve the matter through dialogue. She also disclosed plans to meet with both parties upon her return to Abuja to explore a peaceful resolution, stressing that justice, dignity and the rule of law must guide all actions.
The controversy intensified after a viral video surfaced on Wednesday in which Ohiri alleged assault and non-payment for campaign materials supplied during previous political activities. The video has since circulated widely online, drawing public reactions and calls for accountability.
Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, has denied allegations that he deployed police officers against Ohiri over an alleged campaign debt. In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, the minister described Ohiri’s claims as inconsistent and contradictory.
According to the statement, the police acted within their constitutional mandate after receiving a petition from his lawyer. It added that Ohiri was arrested and the minister was invited to provide a statement in line with standard procedure.
As public discourse continues, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s intervention adds to calls for transparency and a lawful resolution of the dispute.
