The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), , has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21.
Wike also announced a restriction of movement across the FCT from 8:00 p.m. on Friday to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the polls.
The minister made the announcement during a special broadcast on national television and radio on Thursday, urging residents to turn out in large numbers to elect chairmen and councillors for the six area councils.
“On Saturday, February 21, we will all have a crucial opportunity to shape the future of our great Federal Capital Territory,” Wike said, describing the elections as a significant moment for the territory’s democratic development. He called on voters to approach the exercise with responsibility, respect for the law, and acceptance of the outcome.
According to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the declaration of a work-free day and movement restriction followed the approval of President .
Wike stated that all security agencies had been directed to enforce strict compliance with the movement restriction to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
He also commended President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, noting that the move underscored the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring free, fair and transparent elections.
The minister appealed to residents to participate actively in the elections, expressing hope that credible leaders would emerge to promote development, peace and prosperity in the FCT.
“Together, let us build a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and our territory,” Wike said.
