Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said zoning is not provided for in the constitution of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that the party has no plans to zone its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku made the remark during a visit to former President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.
Speaking to journalists, the former Vice President, who was a candidate in the last presidential election, explained that zoning of elective offices is not a constitutional requirement of the ADC, noting that such an arrangement is only formally entrenched in the constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He, however, declined to state categorically whether he intends to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the ADC.
Atiku also weighed in on the ongoing national debate over the electronic transmission of election results, describing the issue as an important aspect of Nigeria’s electoral reform discourse.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and realignments ahead of the 2027 polls.
