Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) pilots narrowly escaped death on Saturday after ejecting from an Alpha Jet that developed an in-flight emergency during a post-inspection functional check flight at the NAF Base in Kainji, Niger State.
The aircraft encountered technical difficulties shortly after take-off. According to reports, the pilots successfully steered the jet away from residential areas before ejecting, a move that prevented possible civilian casualties.
NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, confirmed the incident in a statement. He said the crew reacted “with speed and professionalism,” ensuring the safety of both the pilots and nearby communities.
“They expertly manoeuvred the aircraft away from populated areas before executing a safe ejection,” Ejodame stated.
He added that the two pilots are currently undergoing routine medical evaluation at a NAF medical facility and are reported to be in stable condition.
The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, praised the pilots for their courage, discipline and sound judgement, which he said were instrumental in averting loss of life. He has also ordered the immediate establishment of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Ejodame assured the public that the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to strict safety protocols and operational excellence.
“The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” he said.
Further details on the cause of the in-flight emergency are expected following the completion of the investigation.
