Former Minister of Defence and ex-Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Haliru Mohammed, has announced his retirement from active politics and resignation from the party after more than 40 years in public service.
Mohammed disclosed his decision in a letter dated November 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Nassarawa Ward 1 in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Copies of the letter were also forwarded to the PDP state chairman, the national chairman, and the chairman of the Board of Trustees.
He said the move followed “deep reflection” and a profound sense of fulfilment after decades of contributing to national development.
Recently marking his 80th birthday, Mohammed stated that it was time to take a well-deserved rest and allow younger leaders to steer the party and the country’s political future.
“It has been a rare privilege to serve our nation and our party in various capacities,” he wrote.
“From my early days in public service to my tenures as Minister of Communications and Minister of Defence, to my service as Acting National Chairman and later Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, I have always sought to contribute to the unity, progress and democratic consolidation of our dear country.”
Dr. Mohammed is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the PDP during its years as Nigeria’s ruling party. His political career includes serving as Minister of Communications (1999–2001), Acting National Chairman of the PDP (2011), Minister of Defence (2011–2012), and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees in 2015.
Beyond politics, he played significant roles in public administration, national security reforms, and institutional restructuring.
Reflecting on his decades-long career, Mohammed said he had witnessed Nigeria’s “trials and triumphs” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to its democratic development. He also thanked party members, supporters, and associates for their steadfast loyalty.
Though stepping away from partisan politics, he pledged to remain committed to national unity and public service.
“I shall continue to play my part as an elder citizen, and my experience will always be available whenever my guidance is required in the interest of our nation,” he said.
Mohammed’s resignation is expected to have notable implications for the PDP in Kebbi State, where he has long been a senior stakeholder and influential mobiliser. His exit comes as the party begins efforts to rebuild its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
