The son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has been confirmed as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government following the resignation of his predecessor, Hon. Tunde Azeez.
Azeez, who had been on medical leave since shortly after the swearing-in of the new administration on July 27, 2025, tendered his resignation through a formal letter read during Wednesday’s legislative session by the Leader of the House, Adeshina Haruna. In the letter, Azeez cited persistent health challenges that had prevented him from discharging his official duties effectively.
The council legislators, after deliberations, unanimously endorsed Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, who had been serving as Acting Chairman, as the new helmsman of the local government.
Abdul-Ganiyu’s confirmation did not come as a surprise to many political observers. He had previously shown interest in the chairmanship position during the build-up to the 2025 local government elections but was dropped at the time following opposition to his candidacy.
During Azeez’s absence, Obasa oversaw the council’s grassroots mobilization and administrative functions, a period that lawmakers described as “productive and stabilizing.”
Defending their decision, the legislators said the new chairman had demonstrated competence, credibility, and commitment to the development of Agege.
“His appointment is a testament to his leadership capacity and dedication to community service. This transition ensures governance remains uninterrupted and responsive to the people’s needs,” the council stated.
The lawmakers also expressed appreciation to the outgoing chairman, wishing him a speedy recovery and commending his contributions to the council’s growth.
With his confirmation, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa officially transitions from Acting Chairman to substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government, marking a new chapter in the council’s leadership.
Azeez’s resignation comes barely two months after taking medical leave, effectively paving the way for Obasa’s formal assumption of office.
