Abuja, September 23, 2025 — The Nigerian Senate has postponed the resumption of plenary sessions by two weeks, moving the date from September 23 to October 7, 2025.
The adjustment was contained in an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and circulated to lawmakers on Tuesday.
“This is to respectfully inform Distinguished Senators that the resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025,” the memo read, adding apologies for the short notice.
Although no official reason was provided, National Assembly sources told reporters that the shift was to enable lawmakers fully observe the October 1 Independence Day celebrations before returning to legislative business.
The latest change extends the chamber’s annual recess, which began on July 24, when the Senate adjourned in line with its legislative calendar. At the time, Senate President Akpabio defended the recess as “chamber reciprocity,” noting that the House of Representatives had also embarked on a break.
With plenary now scheduled for October 7, critical debates, oversight functions, and pending motions—including inquiries into government spending and executive appointments—will remain on hold until lawmakers reconvene.
