The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will on Monday, September 29, 2025, swear in 57 newly appointed Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at the Supreme Court’s Main Courtroom in Abuja.
The announcement was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Supreme Court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr Festus Akande. According to him, the swearing-in ceremony is part of activities marking the formal commencement of the 2025/2026 legal year of the apex court.
Justice Kekere-Ekun is expected to deliver the traditional State of the Judiciary address, where she will review the performance of the Supreme Court during the 2024/2025 legal year and provide an overview of developments across the Nigerian judiciary.
Key stakeholders scheduled to speak at the special court session include the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association. Their remarks will focus on challenges facing the justice system and the reforms needed to strengthen judicial administration.
The Supreme Court noted that it began its annual vacation on July 21, 2025, after what was described as a “remarkably successful” legal year. The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee had earlier, on July 24, approved the elevation of the 57 lawyers—56 practising advocates and one academic.
The court confirmed that all programmes marking the new legal year will commence at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 29.
