Lagos is set to make history as the first African city to host the E1 Series electric boat racing championship, scheduled for October 4 and 5, 2025.
The announcement was made during a press briefing on Monday, where Rodi Basso, Chief Executive Officer of the E1 Series, confirmed Lagos’ successful bid to stage the global event after beating several world-class cities.
Describing the development as “a major milestone for sport, sustainability, and commerce in Africa,” Basso said the event would showcase innovation in the boating industry and highlight how alternative power can drive sustainability.
“The ocean is one of nature’s most challenging environments, yet the boating industry is changing. The E1 Series proves boats can become more sustainable by leveraging alternative power and unique architecture,” Basso stated.
The Lagos State Government is partnering with the organisers to host the event, which is expected to attract international investors, promote tourism, and strengthen the state’s global sporting profile.
Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, said Lagos’ selection reflects the city’s growing reputation as a hub of innovation.
“For Lagos, the City of Aquatic Splendour, this is proof of capacity. We are hosting an event that merges speed, sustainability, and innovation. It signals economic opportunity, tourism growth, and global prestige,” Egube noted.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, urged local stakeholders—including artisans, traders, and the hospitality sector—to take advantage of the economic opportunities.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, also highlighted the upcoming Omi Eko Project, which will deploy 72 electric boats to ease congestion and advance sustainable water transport.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said the championship aligns with the THEMES+ development agenda, adding that Lagos is ready to host global events that boost revenue and GDP.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who attended an E1 Series event in Monaco earlier this year, said hosting the championship affirms Lagos’ commitment to clean energy, climate action, and innovative marine transport.
“History is happening here. Lagos is racing for the future, for Africa, for the world,” Sanwo-Olu declared.
The E1 Series in Lagos is expected to draw international attention, placing the city firmly on the global map for both sports and investment.
