The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned its members against attacking Governor Biodun Oyebanji, warning that disciplinary measures would be taken against those found culpable.
The warning followed allegations by the governor that some party members were behind a plot to sponsor coordinated media attacks against him.
In a statement issued on Friday, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, revealed that more than 150 individuals, including national-level social media influencers, had allegedly been paid to launch the campaign beginning next week.
Oyebode said the plan involved discrediting the governor and other key figures in the party using “spurious and malicious allegations, forged documents, and AI-generated graphics.” He added that the same individuals were behind a recent social media attack on President Bola Tinubu, using the poor state of the Itawure-Aramoko-Igede road as a pretext.
“The sponsors of this grand plot, sadly, are members of the ruling APC, who are bent on heating up the polity in a bid to make a cheap political point,” Oyebode alleged. “They have gone back to the drawing board and come up with another action plan, including inducing 150 social media attackers with huge sums of money in foreign currency.”
He said the government was alerting the public to forestall any breach of peace or escalation of political tensions.
Also reacting, the APC State Publicity Secretary, Segun Dipe, urged party members to refrain from divisive actions that could weaken the party.
“We have been warning such members and we will continue to warn, telling them that the primary election will soon be over. Hence, the need for us to come together and not create cracks through which the enemy can enter,” Dipe said.
He stressed that the party would not hesitate to sanction erring members in line with its constitution. “If for any reason anybody tries to bring us down, we will take appropriate action as allowed by the party machinery. We will apply the full weight of the law on those who are trying to sell us cheaply to outsiders.”
