The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert on the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets across the country.
According to the agency, Promasidor Nigeria Limited, the authorised manufacturer of Cowbell milk, raised the alarm after detecting fake products in the market that closely resembled the original brand.
In a statement released on Friday via its official website, NAFDAC said the counterfeit sachets unlawfully used the Cowbell name, packaging design, NAFDAC registration number, and trademark. Promasidor confirmed that the packaging design used by the fake producers was last deployed in September 2023, stressing that the counterfeit milk was not produced or distributed by the company.
To help consumers distinguish between the genuine and fake products, NAFDAC explained that authentic Cowbell sachets are creamy, carry the updated PNG artwork with the inscription “Our Creamy Goodness,” and feature laser-printed batch details on the designated coding area. Their sealing and cutting on the vertical sides are automated.
In contrast, the counterfeit version uses the old PNG artwork “Our Milk,” with ink-printed batch details positioned incorrectly on the sachet. Its sealing and cutting appear manually done, and the product itself does not resemble milk.
The agency warned that consuming counterfeit milk poses serious health risks.
“Such products may contain harmful substances, including toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients that do not meet food safety standards. Consumption could cause foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, or even death in severe cases. Infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are especially vulnerable,” the alert read.
NAFDAC has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and remove the counterfeit milk from circulation. It also urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution, ensuring that all food items are purchased only from authorised sources.
The agency encouraged the public to report suspected cases of counterfeit food through its toll-free number (0800-162-3322), email (sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng), or its official website. Adverse reactions or side effects can also be reported via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.
