Rabat, Morocco – July 26, 2025
It’s a night of glory for Nigeria! The Super Falcons staged one of the greatest comebacks in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) history, battling from two goals down to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 and claim a record-extending tenth WAFCON title at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The Moroccans came flying out of the blocks, electrifying the packed stadium with first-half goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, as the hosts looked poised to dethrone the queens of African football.
But Nigeria’s Super Falcons—never strangers to adversity—emerged from the tunnel a different side in the second half, fired up and fearless.
Esther Okoronkwo pulled one back from the penalty spot to ignite hope. Moments later, Okoronkwo turned provider, delivering a pinpoint assist to Folashade Ijamilusi, who made no mistake in drawing Nigeria level.
With the game hanging in the balance and extra time looming, Jennifer Echegini rose to the occasion, latching onto a well-delivered free-kick to bury the late winner that broke Moroccan hearts and sent Nigerian fans into euphoria.
Head Coach Justine Madugu, visibly emotional, hailed his team’s fighting spirit:
“We were down, but never out. This team showed the heart of true champions. From 0-2 to 3-2, this is what legends are made of!”
This historic triumph not only avenges Nigeria’s painful semi-final loss to Morocco in 2022 but also cements the Super Falcons’ legacy as the undisputed queens of African football, with an unprecedented 10 WAFCON titles to their name.
