Abuja | July 3, 2025 — Former President Muhammadu Buhari is currently unwell but has not been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, contrary to widespread media speculation, his former aide has clarified.
Bashir Ahmad, who served as Special Assistant on Digital Media to the ex-president, issued a statement on Thursday debunking reports that the retired general was in critical condition and receiving intensive medical care.
“In light of the recent media reports suggesting that former President Muhammadu Buhari is critically ill and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), we find it necessary to set the record straight,” the statement read in part.
Ahmad confirmed that while Buhari is indeed experiencing health issues, the situation has been grossly exaggerated by some media outlets. He emphasized that the former president’s condition is stable and not as dire as speculated.
The clarification comes amid rising concerns and public interest in the health status of the 81-year-old former leader, who left office in May 2023 after completing two terms.
Buhari has largely stayed out of the spotlight since leaving office, residing in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
