Abuja, July 2, 2025 — In a major political shakeup, former Senate President David Mark has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending decades of loyalty to the party he once helped lead.
In a resignation letter dated June 27, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Otukpo Ward 1 in Benue State, Mark cited the party’s worsening internal divisions and persistent leadership crisis as key reasons for his departure.
The letter, obtained by The PUNCH on Wednesday, described the PDP as “a shadow of its former self” and lamented its decline into public ridicule due to unresolved internal issues.
“I bring warm greetings to you and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otukpo Ward 1, and by extension, to the entire Benue State and Nigeria,” the letter read in part. “I write to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the party with immediate effect.”
Mark recalled his unwavering commitment to the PDP, especially during its most turbulent times. “Even when nearly all stakeholders departed the party following our loss in the 2015 presidential election, I pledged to remain the last man standing,” he said.
Sources close to the former Senate President confirmed on Wednesday that Mark has now aligned with a newly formed opposition coalition, though official details of the political alliance are yet to be announced.
David Mark’s exit marks a significant blow to the PDP, as he was regarded as one of its elder statesmen and most consistent loyalists. Political analysts say his departure could trigger further defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
