President Bola Tinubu on Friday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing education and healthcare as essential pillars of national development during a meeting with the newly crowned 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The President also emphasized the pivotal role of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s progress and called for greater collaboration between the government and royal fathers to effectively implement policies that directly impact citizens.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu congratulated the Alaafin on his ascension to the historic throne, describing it as both divinely orchestrated and widely accepted by the people. “Your ascendancy to the throne of your fathers is historic. It is the will of God and the heart of the people,” he said.
Drawing a parallel between their leadership journeys, Tinubu likened the Alaafin’s rise to his own presidency. “The inherited tradition is the making of the Almighty God… The hurdles, processes, and anxiety we faced were all part of the divine preparation for the responsibilities we now bear.”
He lauded the traditional council for ensuring a smooth succession following the death of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III in April 2022, and praised Oba Owoade I’s character and dedication to Yoruba culture.
“I am happy that you have shown character and discipline, and uplifted your people’s name, values, and culture—even while in Canada. I am glad you have become a hope of sustaining the Yoruba race,” Tinubu added.
