Panic spread across Agulu and Nanka communities in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday following the brutal killing of a lawyer and his client by unidentified gunmen shortly after a court session.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victims were trailed from the courtroom before being ambushed and shot at the boundary between Nanka and Agulu, along the Amawbia-Agulu-Nanka-Ekwulobia-Uga-Akokwa highway.
Sources said the lawyer was handling a high-profile case for the client, which may have drawn the attention of the assailants. “The lawyer was shot first, and as the client tried to flee from the vehicle, he was gunned down as well. The attackers fled immediately after the attack,” a local resident said.
The motive behind the killings remains unclear, but the brazen nature of the attack has left the community in shock.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the police have commenced a full investigation. He added that Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had visited the scene with a team of senior officers.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the victims were ambushed while returning from a court session. They were trailed and double-crossed by the assailants,” Ikenga stated.
The police have vowed to track down the perpetrators and ensure justice is served.
