December 9, 2024 – The Orthodox Public Affairs Committee (OPAC), a US-based international organization committed to eradicating religious persecution and intolerance worldwide, has voiced deep concerns over the challenges facing Christians in Syria amid ongoing political and social unrest.
In a statement released today, OPAC urged governing authorities to uphold the rights of Christians and other religious minorities to practice their faith freely, without fear of persecution or discrimination.
Syria’s ancient Christian communities, a vital part of the region’s historical and cultural fabric, have endured severe hardships throughout the years of conflict, including displacement, violence, and the destruction of sacred places of worship. OPAC praised the resilience of these communities and called on the new Syrian regime to ensure that their religious freedoms are respected and preserved.

As part of its mission to support Orthodox Christians worldwide, OPAC has taken proactive steps to aid the Syrian Orthodox community. Over the past year, the organization has sent more than 1,000 Bibles and educational materials to Syrian Christians, many of whom have had limited access to scripture due to the ongoing war. This initiative aims to help young Syrian Christians reconnect with their faith and heritage, providing them with hope and spiritual guidance in challenging times.
OPAC also appealed to the international community to remain vigilant in safeguarding the rights of religious minorities in Syria and the broader region. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of Orthodox Christians and promoting religious coexistence.
“Let us work together to ensure that the light of faith continues to shine brightly in the cradle of Christianity,” OPAC’s statement concluded, underscoring the need for peace, stability, and mutual respect among all religious groups.
