Motorists and passengers were stranded for hours on Monday after a truck accident near a failed portion of a bridge along the Isoko axis of the Lagos-Benin Expressway rendered the busy route impassable.
A viral video from the scene showed long queues of vehicles trapped on both sides of the road as commuters raised concerns over the dilapidated state of the bridge, which exposed a river beneath.
One stranded passenger, speaking in the footage, lamented that road users had been stuck for more than two hours. He described the situation as a major threat to lives and businesses, warning that the standstill was crippling the movement of goods and services across the vital highway.
“This is the Lagos-Benin Expressway, a key economic route, yet the road is collapsing,” the commuter said, criticising the Federal Government’s prioritisation of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project over repairs on existing infrastructure.
The passenger urged the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to urgently intervene, stressing that the collapse of the bridge section could have led to a major tragedy if the truck had plunged into the river.
The video, which has since gone viral on social media, has sparked widespread public concern, with many Nigerians describing the expressway as a “death trap” and calling for immediate rehabilitation.
