Maiduguri, July 29, 2025 — The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Borno State, on Tuesday unveiled a newly completed Medical ICT Institute, named in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in recognition of his administration’s commitment to healthcare transformation in Nigeria.
The commissioning ceremony was part of activities marking the 110th General Meeting of Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) across the country, and attracted top political figures, government officials, traditional rulers, and key stakeholders in the health sector.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo, described the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Medical ICT Institute as the first of its kind in Nigeria, designed to significantly enhance healthcare delivery through the integration of information and communication technology.
“This centre represents a major milestone in the advancement of medical education and digital healthcare infrastructure,” Ahidjo said. “We are proud to name it after President Tinubu, whose administration has shown unwavering support for the health sector.”
Ahidjo also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its continued support, revealing that the hospital had received all its requests under the current administration. He noted that eight newly completed projects within the hospital—ranging from health facilities to road infrastructure—were also named after individuals who had made significant contributions to UMTH’s development.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who attended the event, described the ICT institute as a reflection of President Tinubu’s renewed commitment to health as a cornerstone of his administration’s national development agenda.
“In just two years, President Tinubu has elevated health to a top priority, using the sector as a unifying force across the country,” Pate stated. “Nearly every federal health institution now has one or more federal projects either completed or nearing completion. This is part of a broader transformation being driven by CMDs and healthcare leaders nationwide.”
He commended the leadership of CMDs for their dedication and said their efforts were instrumental in driving progress across Nigeria’s healthcare institutions.
“It is truly fitting that UMTH chose to commission the ICT centre in the name of President Tinubu. This centre will go a long way in boosting medical innovation, training, and service delivery,” he added.
Also present at the ceremony were Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Deputy Governor Usman Kadafur, members of the National and State Assemblies, traditional leaders, and other high-ranking government officials.
The event highlighted the Federal Government’s increasing investment in healthcare infrastructure and marked a significant step forward in integrating digital technologies into Nigeria’s health system.
