Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State – July 21, 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday departed Abuja for Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony held in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
The development was announced via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the President’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has left Abuja for Ijebu-Ode to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona,” Olusegun wrote.
Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91. He was laid to rest the following day in accordance with Islamic rites, concluding a remarkable 65-year reign as the traditional ruler of Ijebuland.
Sunday’s prayer event, scheduled to take place at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, has drawn dignitaries from across the country, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and other top government officials.
Security has been visibly heightened across Ijebu-Ode, especially along major routes leading to the stadium, the Awujale’s Palace, and his Igbeba private residence, in anticipation of the large turnout.
The late monarch was widely respected for his statesmanship, vision, and steadfast commitment to the development of Ijebuland and the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage. His passing has drawn nationwide tributes and marked the end of an era in traditional leadership.
