In the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, Napoli star Victor Osimhen is yet to make his mark, having scored just one goal. However, Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro remains optimistic about Osimhen’s goal-scoring prowess and reassures Nigerian fans ahead of the upcoming match against Cameroon.

The 2013 AFCON champions are gearing up to face their closest neighbor, Cameroon, in the round of 16 after both teams secured runner-up positions in their respective groups. Despite Nigeria attempting 41 shots in the group stage, they managed to score only three goals, raising concerns among football enthusiasts about the team’s goal-scoring capabilities.

Addressing these concerns in a press conference Coach Peseiro staunchly defended his key player amid a goal drought in the last two matches of the 34th AFCON edition. Expressing confidence in Osimhen’s abilities, Peseiro believes the talismanic striker will break the deadlock in the crucial last-16 match against Cameroon.

Acknowledging that Osimhen missed several scoring chances in the previous two games, Peseiro emphasized the striker’s importance to the team and expressed optimism about a positive outcome in the upcoming fixture.

“For our next match, Osimhen will score; he’s important for the team. He’s the top scorer, but this is a different tournament and tough competition. He deserves to reach the top position because against Equatorial Guinea, he created so many chances and he scored,” remarked Peseiro.

The Super Eagles star, honored as the Confederation of African Football Best Player for the year 2023, seeks to make a significant impact in the tournament and silence doubters when Nigeria faces the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in a highly anticipated Saturday fixture.
