Libreville, Gabon – Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, was among several African leaders who attended the inauguration of Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema as President of Gabon on Saturday, marking a significant moment in the Central African nation’s political transition.
The ceremony, held at the Stade de l’Amitié Sino-Gabonaise in Libreville, featured vibrant military parades, cultural displays, and a strong show of national pride. It came after Nguema’s decisive victory in the April 12, 2025 presidential election, in which he defeated seven other candidates.
Nguema had been serving as Gabon’s interim leader for the past 20 months following the removal of long-time president Ali Bongo in a political upheaval.
In his inaugural address, President Nguema thanked the Gabonese people for their confidence and pledged to focus on national development, particularly youth empowerment. He also vowed to tackle key issues including insecurity, crime, and inadequate access to clean water.
Vice President Shettima’s attendance reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for democratic processes across Africa and its commitment to regional cooperation.
