The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sanction politicians and political parties engaging in premature election campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on Sunday, the group warned that failure to enforce existing electoral laws against early campaigning could compel it to initiate legal action against the commission.
SERAP stressed that the Electoral Act clearly defines the timeline for political campaigns and prohibits politicians from canvassing for votes before the official window. It argued that ongoing rallies and public declarations by some political figures undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
“INEC must demonstrate independence and impartiality by holding political parties accountable. Allowing early campaigns without consequences risks setting a dangerous precedent for impunity,” the group said.
The organisation also reminded INEC of its constitutional responsibility to ensure free, fair, and credible elections by enforcing compliance with electoral laws.
SERAP noted that ignoring violations now could erode public trust in INEC ahead of the 2027 elections and jeopardise the commission’s credibility.
