Rahaman Ali, the younger brother of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and a former professional fighter himself, has died at the age of 82.
The Muhammad Ali Centre confirmed his passing in a Facebook statement on Saturday, describing Rahaman as a lifelong supporter of his iconic brother. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
“You can’t tell Muhammad’s story without mentioning Rahaman,” said DeVone Holt, President and CEO of the Ali Centre. “He was one of the most constant sources of support for Muhammad during his career, and their relationship was a true example of what it means to be ‘my brother’s keeper.'”
Born Rudolph Valentino Clay on July 18, 1943, Rahaman followed in his brother’s footsteps into the boxing world. Though his career was often overshadowed by Muhammad Ali’s global stardom, he made his mark in the ring, recording 14 wins in 18 professional bouts between 1964 and 1972.
However, Rahaman’s legacy goes beyond his own boxing career. He played a vital behind-the-scenes role in Muhammad Ali’s life—training with him, travelling alongside him, and offering unwavering support during some of the sport’s most iconic moments.
He also shared his journey and reflections in two memoirs: That’s Muhammad Ali’s Brother! My Life on the Undercard (2014) and My Brother, Muhammad Ali – The Definitive Biography (2019).
Tributes have poured in from the Ali family, with Muhammad Ali’s daughter, Hana Ali, sharing an emotional message:
“Today, the last living member of my father’s immediate family returned to heaven. Uncle Rock had a heart of gold. He never needed a spotlight to shine… and I believe that now, from above, he and Daddy are part of something bigger… something beautiful.”
Muhammad’s daughter and former boxing champion, Laila Ali, also paid tribute via Instagram:
“My father loved his brother Rahaman so deeply. They are now back in the arms of their beloved parents. May they all rest in eternal peace together.”
Rahaman Ali is remembered not only for his contributions to boxing but also for the quiet strength, loyalty, and love he brought to the life and legacy of “The Greatest.”
