BIRNIN KEBBI — The Kebbi State Police Command has attributed the recent outbreak of political violence in the state to the unauthorised use of sirens and premature campaign activities by rival political groups.
The Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, disclosed this on Monday after a closed-door security meeting with Governor Nasir Idris in Birnin Kebbi.
The meeting followed an attack earlier in the day on the convoy of former Minister of Justice and African Democratic Congress (ADC) leader in the state, Abubakar Malami, who came under assault by suspected political thugs in the state capital.
“The unauthorised use of sirens by politicians and their supporters, coupled with campaign activities outside the approved period, is fueling rivalry and increasing the risk of violence,” Bello said.
The police chief condemned what he described as a “growing disregard for electoral guidelines and public safety regulations,” warning that such behaviour could worsen political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.
He stressed that the command would not hesitate to sanction offenders, vowing: “We will not tolerate any act capable of threatening peace and public order in Kebbi State. Anyone caught using illegal sirens or engaging in premature political campaigns will face the full weight of the law.”
Bello confirmed that investigations into the convoy attack had begun, with security agencies working to identify and arrest those responsible.
He urged political actors and their supporters to adhere strictly to electoral rules and place the peace and stability of the state above partisan interests.
