Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to the Aguata Anglican Diocese to support the acquisition and revitalisation of the Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Isulo, Orumba South Local Government Area.
Obi, who presented the first tranche of the cheque during a visit to the facility on Friday, said the gesture was part of his continued commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria. He stressed that education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation remained the pillars of national development.
“The decision to support the diocese was motivated by a personal conviction that investing in healthcare is one of the most meaningful ways to uplift society,” Obi said.
He recalled the transformation of the Diocese of Amichi’s hospital and School of Nursing, which he supported as governor, expressing confidence that the Isulo facility would achieve similar success.
Leading Obi on a tour of the hospital, the Chairman of the Aguata Diocesan Hospital Board, Archdeacon M.C. Obi, thanked him for his consistent support for projects that impact lives. He said the diocese plans to expand the hospital into a full health complex, with a School of Nursing, School of Midwifery, and School of Health Technology to meet the growing medical needs of the region.
“The access road to this facility was originally built during Mr Obi’s tenure as governor, a clear sign of his long-standing commitment to infrastructure and human development,” the cleric noted.
Obi was accompanied on the visit by Prof. Chinyere Okunna, who described the donation as a bold and visionary step, commending both Obi and the diocese for prioritising healthcare.
This donation comes months after Obi presented another ₦10 million cheque to the Tansian College of Nursing, Oba, in March 2025. At that event, he reiterated his belief that Nigeria’s progress depended on investment in human capital through quality education and healthcare.
With the revitalisation plan, the Aguata Diocese hopes to transform the Good Hope Specialist Hospital into a centre of excellence for healthcare delivery and training in Anambra State.
