The 2025 edition of the Osun-Osogbo Cultural Festival commenced on Monday with the traditional ‘Iwopopo’, a spiritual cleansing of the town’s paths that marks the beginning of the revered annual celebration.
The symbolic ritual, held at Gbaemu Junction in Osogbo, witnessed a colorful convergence of traditional chiefs, Osun devotees, cultural groups, community members, and government officials, all paying homage to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.
Flanked by his wives, the Ataoja offered prayers for the different individuals and delegations who came to pay their respects, invoking blessings for peace, prosperity, and continued progress in the land.
Among the dignitaries in attendance was the Osun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Ojo Abiodun, who delivered a message of solidarity and support from the state government led by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
“I am here to pay homage to our royal father,” Abiodun said. “I want to assure you that our government will visit you soon, and we will do what is expected of us. The Osogbo community is highly valued by this administration.”
In his response, Oba Olanipekun expressed appreciation for the government’s recognition and offered prayers for the continued success of the Adeleke administration.
“I want to let you know that I am praying for the administration. May you continue to witness more success,” the monarch said. “The state will continue to move forward, and by God’s grace, we will not witness any unfortunate events in our land. This year’s Osun-Osogbo will bring more joy to our people.”
The Osun-Osogbo Festival, recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, continues to attract both local and international attention, celebrating Yoruba spirituality, culture, and the enduring legacy of the sacred Osun River goddess.
