The Ogun State Government has sanctioned 128 residents and 20 industries for indiscriminate waste disposal across various parts of the state.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser and Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Abayomi Hunye, the offenders were apprehended in Sango-Ota, Ifo, Ijebu-Ode, Papa Lanto, and Abeokuta, as well as along the Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu-Abeokuta expressways.
Hunye disclosed that the Enforcement Squad caught residents dumping refuse on road medians and public spaces, while trucks belonging to industries were found offloading waste along major highways. The residents were sentenced to hours of community service, while the firms faced sanctions in line with state environmental laws.
“What is of concern is that those apprehended deliberately sabotaged the state’s effort to maintain cleanliness by refusing to patronise government-approved waste collectors,” Hunye said. “Their actions are not only illegal but also endanger public health and safety.”
He stressed that the enforcement team would sustain surveillance to curb environmental violations, urging residents and businesses to comply with proper waste management practices for a cleaner and healthier Ogun State.
