The Labour Party (LP) has ruled out the possibility of former presidential candidate Peter Obi flying its flag in the 2027 general elections.
LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made the declaration on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics.
“We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi said, insisting the party’s 2023 momentum was driven more by the #EndSARS movement and widespread discontent with the Buhari administration than by Obi’s political strength.
The former Anambra State governor had recently urged his supporters to vote for African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidates during August by-elections, citing the absence of LP candidates in some constituencies. The party, however, described Obi’s remarks as false and anti-party.
Arabambi accused LP’s Acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, and activist Aisha Yesufu of aligning with Obi, vowing that the party would move against them.
“Now that they said they are going to ADC, we wish them well. Obi has one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC,” he said.
He further challenged Obi to formally announce his departure if he believed he could win without the LP platform.
“If he thinks he can get seven million votes in 2027 on his own, he should pronounce his exit from Labour Party. The momentum in 2023 was not because of Peter Obi, but because Nigerians were fed up with the Buhari administration,” Arabambi said.
The comments come amid heightened speculation about Obi’s political future and his growing ties with the ADC.
