The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that six passengers sustained injuries on Tuesday after a Kaduna-bound train derailed along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor.
The incident, which occurred at about 11:09 a.m. at KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station, caused panic among commuters but no fatalities were recorded.
In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the NSIB said a response team had been deployed to the site to collect evidence, engage stakeholders, and commence an investigation into the cause of the accident.
“Current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, and no recorded fatalities. A go-team has been deployed to the site to gather evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and commence an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident,” the statement read.
The Bureau extended sympathy to the injured passengers, adding that the probe would focus on both direct and underlying factors behind the derailment to help prevent future occurrences.
NSIB Director General, Captain Alex Badeh, also assured Nigerians of a thorough inquiry.
“We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. Investigators are already on-site to uncover the root cause of this derailment. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation,” he said.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers fleeing in panic after the train veered off the tracks. One passenger said the derailment happened without warning, sparking confusion as people scrambled out of the affected cabins.
The NSIB has pledged to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
