Abuja, July 23, 2025 — The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of two Nigerian traders in South Africa, calling for a thorough investigation and swift justice.
The victims, identified as Austin and Ayo, were reportedly shot dead at close range by masked gunmen in Durban. According to preliminary accounts, the assailants stormed Austin’s office and opened fire, killing both men instantly.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by NiDCOM spokesperson Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Commission’s Chairman and CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the killings as “senseless, barbaric, and intolerable.” She confirmed that the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa is already investigating the matter and engaging relevant authorities.
“This unprovoked attack is a stark reminder of the persistent dangers Nigerians face abroad,” Dabiri-Erewa said. “We urge South African authorities to leave no stone unturned in identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators.”
She expressed dismay over the continued delay in the implementation of the early warning mechanisms previously agreed upon by Nigeria and South Africa to prevent such incidents. “It is regrettable that despite bilateral agreements, South Africa has yet to enforce the mechanisms designed to safeguard Nigerian citizens,” she stated.
While extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the NiDCOM boss assured them that the Nigerian government will pursue justice relentlessly.
She also appealed for calm among Nigerians living in South Africa, warning against retaliation and urging citizens to allow due process to take its course.
“The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has formally requested a comprehensive and impartial investigation by South African authorities,” the statement added.
This latest attack has once again raised concerns about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, where previous incidents of xenophobic violence have strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.
