Lagos | July 5, 2025 — The Lagos State University (LASU) has dismissed two lecturers over allegations of gross misconduct, including sexual harassment, financial fraud, and the inhumane treatment of students.
The decision to terminate their appointments was approved during the institution’s 143rd Statutory Meeting of the Governing Council held on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Emmanuel Fanu, the disciplinary action followed investigations that confirmed the academic staff members’ involvement in serious ethical violations.
One of the affected lecturers is Dr. Olatunji Abanikanda, who served as the Dean of LASU’s Epe campus in the Department of Agricultural Science.
Fanu revealed that Dr. Abanikanda was found guilty of subjecting students to degrading and inhumane treatment during their practical coursework on the departmental farm.
His misconduct came under scrutiny after a viral video emerged on social media, showing students left exposed to harsh weather conditions—standing in the sun and rain without shelter—while under his supervision.
The names and specific offences of the second dismissed lecturer were not disclosed in the statement. However, the university reiterated its commitment to upholding a safe and ethical academic environment for all students.
“The university has zero tolerance for misconduct, especially when it compromises the welfare and dignity of our students,” Fanu stated.
