Lagos, July 20, 2025 — Lagos State has been confirmed as the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Electric Powerboat Championship, a landmark global sporting event set to take place on October 4 and 5, 2025.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement on Sunday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account following his participation at the E1 Racing Championship event in Monaco, where he was joined by notable figures, including Africa’s richest man and Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.
“The E1 Championship is a vivid demonstration of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “I’m proud to share that Lagos will become the first African city to host this championship. It’s a major milestone for the sport and for what it says about our city.”
The E1 Championship is the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series, designed to accelerate global conversations around clean energy, sustainability, and innovation in marine transportation.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos’ selection as a host city signifies its growing role as a hub for innovation, tourism, and eco-conscious development. “It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” he said.
Beyond the racing spectacle, the governor highlighted the cultural and economic benefits of hosting the event, including global visibility, tourism opportunities, and youth engagement.
“This is more than just a sporting event—it’s a platform to showcase Lagos’ vibrant culture, our energy, and the spirit of our people. It’s an opportunity to welcome visitors from around the world and share our story,” Sanwo-Olu added.
He also expressed appreciation to Afreximbank for supporting the event and investing in Team Drogba, the E1 racing team led by football icon Didier Drogba.
“I’m grateful to Afreximbank for their support, not just as a partner but as a believer in what Lagos can achieve. Their investment in Team Drogba and commitment to this vision mean a great deal,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu concluded with optimism, describing the upcoming championship as a transformative event for Lagos.
“We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores. It’s a new chapter for Lagos, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we have to offer,” he said.
The October event is expected to attract global attention, cementing Lagos’ status as a rising player in international sports, clean energy advocacy, and marine innovation.
