The Lagos State Government has begun the creation of natural water flow channels along road networks in flood-prone areas of Lagos Island, as part of efforts to tackle recurring flooding and improve urban infrastructure.
The initiative was unveiled on Friday during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of an ultra-modern shopping mall at the site of the demolished Pelewura Iron Rod Market, Adeniji Adele.
The project, being executed by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, through the Office of Urban Development in collaboration with the Lagos Island Local Council Development Area, is expected to be completed within one year.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, said the regeneration of Pelewura market aligns with the state’s master plan for Lagos Island.
“In theory, Lagos Island is not below sea level, but it is very close, which makes drainage management critical,” Olumide explained.
“We are creating natural drainage channels by removing structures that obstruct water flow. The goal is to restore the free-flowing drains of old, when water could move unhindered.”
Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Olajide Abiodun, said the planned shopping mall symbolised a “renewed life” for Lagos Island, while Chairman of Lagos Island LCDA, Folawiyo Alade, assured that the project would be delivered within schedule.
The drainage works are expected to reduce the impact of perennial flooding on residents while also supporting the state’s wider regeneration and infrastructure upgrade agenda.
