The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, Ganiyu Egunjobi, has declared support for Abdulganiyu Obasa, son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate in the forthcoming local government elections.
Egunjobi, speaking to journalists on Friday, defended the outcome of the May 10 APC primaries, which has sparked allegations of imposition, particularly in Agege and Orile-Agege, where party members protested against perceived favoritism in the selection of candidates.
“The young man deserves to succeed me,” Egunjobi stated, brushing aside accusations that Speaker Obasa was planting loyalists and relatives as candidates. He dismissed the protests as politically motivated stunts orchestrated by “desperate individuals.”
Critics, including some aspirants who failed to secure the party’s nomination, have accused the Speaker of unduly influencing the process to favor his son and close associates.
However, Egunjobi insisted the primaries were credible and applauded the APC leadership and election committee for their efforts. “Those crying imposition would have celebrated the outcome if it had gone their way,” he said.
He further accused some of the aggrieved aspirants of returning to the party just before the primaries, questioning their eligibility and commitment. He also hinted at external influences behind the unrest, referencing unnamed political figures allegedly backing the protests.
The Lagos council elections are scheduled for July 12.
