Abuja | July 3, 2025 — The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, demanding his immediate resignation from the party following his alignment with the newly unveiled opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi was formally introduced on Wednesday as a key figure in the ADC-led coalition, a political movement aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
In a statement released Thursday in Abuja, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, accused Obi of political disloyalty and alleged that he had been actively lobbying party members to join him in what the party described as a “new political venture.”
“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him,” Ifoh said.
The Labour Party emphasized that it was not part of the coalition and would not tolerate members engaging in what it termed “dual agendas” or operating with “deceptive personas.”
“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party,” the statement added.
The development marks a dramatic turn in the post-2023 political landscape, as Obi’s role in the new coalition continues to spark internal frictions within opposition parties.
