Britain’s political landscape shifted dramatically today as Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, was officially appointed as the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister by King Charles III. Following a resounding electoral triumph, Starmer’s appointment marks the end of a 14-year Conservative reign under Rishi Sunak, whose resignation was accepted earlier by the monarch.
The formal ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace, where King Charles III extended his hand to Starmer in a historic moment captured by palace photographers. A statement released by the palace confirmed the transition of power, noting that “The King received in audience The Right Honourable Sir Keir Starmer MP today and requested him to form a new Administration.”
Starmer, in accepting the role, also assumed the position of First Lord of the Treasury, promising a new era of governance under Labour’s centre-left policies. His ascension to the premiership follows Labour’s landslide victory in the general election, a result that significantly alters the political landscape of the United Kingdom.
