Abuja, July 3, 2025 — Seven members of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom State have officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift within the state’s National Assembly caucus.
The lawmakers, previously elected on the platforms of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP), announced their defection in separate letters addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during Thursday’s plenary session.
Their move strengthens the APC’s presence in the lower chamber and signals growing support for the party in Akwa Ibom, a state traditionally dominated by the PDP.
Details regarding the reasons behind their defection were not immediately disclosed, but sources within the National Assembly suggest the decision may be tied to political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
More details to follow.
