Lagos, July 29, 2025 — Telecommunications giant Globacom has announced the commencement of a far-reaching network upgrade and expansion initiative aimed at significantly improving service delivery and customer experience across Nigeria.
The company made the disclosure in a statement issued on Tuesday, reaffirming its commitment to delivering superior network quality and wider coverage—especially in the wake of recently approved tariff adjustments by regulatory authorities.
According to Globacom, the ambitious project includes the strategic deployment of new base stations, the relocation of fibre infrastructure affected by road construction, and the expansion of 4G LTE coverage across urban and rural communities.
“We decided, at a huge cost, to relocate the fibres, many of which had been vandalised in several places by uncoordinated road construction activities, in order to bring best-in-class services to customers,” the company stated.
Globacom noted that the network densification initiative would not only bring connectivity to previously underserved areas but also enhance quality in high-density urban locations. Key locations affected by the fibre relocation exercise include major transit corridors such as Auchi-Okene, Benin-Ekpoma, Lafia-Akwanga, Minna-Abuja, and Funtua-Gusau.
Highlighting progress made so far, the company revealed that thousands of new 4G LTE sites have already been deployed this year, with hundreds more underway. The network’s backhaul infrastructure—comprising both fibre optic and microwave systems—is also being upgraded to boost capacity and improve data speeds.
“These exercises signal brighter prospects for Glo customers,” the company assured. “Once completed, the upgrade will deliver enhanced service quality, faster internet speeds, and more reliable voice and data connectivity nationwide.”
Looking ahead, Globacom plans to add over 1,000 new sites within the next year, with a focus on expanding LTE coverage to deepen broadband penetration. The company is also prioritising the extension of fibre links to many of its hub sites to ensure robust and reliable service delivery.
As part of its long-term sustainability goals, Globacom is investing in hybrid power solutions at its base stations, reducing dependence on diesel generators and increasing reliance on battery-powered systems. This shift is aimed at cutting carbon emissions and promoting environmentally friendly operations.
However, the telecom operator raised concerns about the continued sabotage of its network infrastructure despite telecommunications equipment being classified as critical national infrastructure. It called for stronger enforcement and protection measures to curb vandalism and safeguard its investments.
With the ongoing upgrades, Globacom says it is poised to deliver improved value to its customers across Nigeria, offering broader coverage, better call quality, and faster, more reliable data services.
