The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has convicted 46 motorists for various traffic offences during a Mobile Court session in Calabar on Friday.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Abigail Asuquo, tried cases ranging from attempts to bribe marshals to overloading of vehicles and driver’s licence violations.
According to a statement by FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, ten offenders who attempted to bribe marshals on duty were fined ₦10,000 each, while another ten were fined the same amount for overloading. The court also imposed fines totalling ₦80,000 for driver’s licence infractions.
Eighteen other motorists were penalised for faulty lighting systems, lack of caution signs, cracked windscreens, worn-out tyres, non-compliance with passenger manifest regulations, and failure to install speed limiters. One defendant was cautioned and discharged after being sensitised by the court.
FRSC Sector Commander in Cross River State, Innocent Etuk, described the Mobile Court as a vital tool for enforcing discipline on the roads.
“The Mobile Court exercise remains a critical tool in curbing road traffic violations, deterring recalcitrant offenders, and instilling discipline among road users. The decision of the court will serve as a deterrent and strengthen compliance with traffic regulations across the state,” he said.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed also reaffirmed FRSC’s 2025 strategic goal of reducing road crashes and fatalities by 10 per cent through strict enforcement, public enlightenment, and stakeholder collaboration.
“Motorists must avoid behaviours that compromise road safety, particularly attempts to bribe officials,” he cautioned.
Between January and June 2025, FRSC operatives arrested 290,887 offenders for committing 319,798 traffic violations, including offences related to seatbelts, overloading, number plates, tyres, speed limits, and expired licences.
