The Federal Government on Tuesday inaugurated a newly built 80-bed specialist hospital in Ugbuwangue community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, dedicated to maternal and child healthcare.
The hospital, constructed through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was formally handed over to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, for management.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, commended President Bola Tinubu for the project, describing it as a critical intervention that would promote good health for mothers and children in the region.
“The hospital, without any doubt, will ultimately change the Ugbuwangue community. Without health, there is no wealth. Wealth is meaningless without health,” the monarch said. He, however, urged the Federal Government to undertake more developmental projects in Delta State and charged residents to protect the facility and ensure unhindered access to it.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, praised the initiative, stressing that the project aligns with his administration’s M.O.R.E. Agenda and the national drive to achieve health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
“This hospital is not just a physical structure; it is a beacon of hope. By investing in healthcare, we are investing in the future of our state,” the governor said, assuring stakeholders of effective management and service delivery.
Chairman of Warri South LGA, Isaac Agbateyiniro, noted that the hospital would significantly reduce maternal and child mortality rates in the area.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, described the facility as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at reducing maternal and child mortality nationwide. “This ultra-modern facility is one of the numerous hospitals constructed and fully equipped by my office to enhance equitable access to healthcare,” she said.
Acting Medical Director of FMC Asaba, Dr. Ekeneam Omo, highlighted the hospital’s facilities, which include emergency, paediatric, neonatal, labour and female wards, an ICU, modern theatre, laboratory, consulting rooms, staff quarters, and an alternative power supply system. He pledged that patients would receive care with dignity and excellence, while calling for additional support to expand diagnostic services and acquire advanced medical equipment.
