The Executive Chairman of Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Moyosore Adebanjo, has inaugurated the campaign executives of the Tinubu Torch Bearers (Women’s Wing), Onigbongbo Chapter. He charged them to intensify grassroots mobilisation and engage women, youths and residents ahead of the forthcoming elections.

In her opening remarks, the Chairperson, Mrs. Wunmi Adebanjo, represented by the wife of the Vice-Chairman, Alhaja Adebimpe Oloyede, urged the newly inaugurated executives to take their responsibilities seriously by actively engaging young people across the community, particularly those yet to obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs), and encouraging greater participation in the democratic process.

The LGA Party Woman Leader, Mrs. Bola Balogun, expressed appreciation to the Chairman for his support and confidence in the women and commended him for recognising their capacity and making time to participate in the inauguration. She assured the Chairman of the women’s commitment to the success of the party and its candidates.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Moyosore Adebanjo charged the campaign executives to become effective grassroots ambassadors of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly by communicating government policies, programmes and interventions that directly impact Nigerians, with emphasis on students, youths and other beneficiaries.

The Chairman stressed that their responsibility goes beyond political mobilisation, urging them to prioritise meaningful engagement, effective communication, voter education and community outreach in order to bridge the gap between government and the people at the grassroots.

He further charged the executives to work collectively towards the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and all candidates of the party in the forthcoming elections.

The Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda is mourning the death of its monarch, His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

King Oyo ascended the throne in 1995 at the age of just three, following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.

His ascension made him one of the youngest monarchs in the world and drew considerable attention to the historic Ugandan kingdom. Over the years, however, he grew into the role and became a respected symbol of the rich history, culture and traditions of the people of Tooro.

His reign was closely associated with the preservation and promotion of the identity, heritage and cultural values of the Tooro people. As Omusinga, or King, he represented a cherished institution whose roots are deeply embedded in the history of western Uganda.

His passing has plunged the Tooro Kingdom into mourning, with tributes expected from the royal family, traditional leaders, government officials and members of the public.

King Oyo’s death is a profound loss to the Tooro Kingdom, Uganda and all those who admired his leadership and the cultural heritage he represented.

The Kingdom is now left to mourn a monarch who, despite ascending the throne as a child, grew to become an important custodian of Tooro’s history, traditions and cultural identity.

All roads lead to Abuja as Nigeria’s political, business, traditional and media elite converge for the Daily Times of Nigeria @100 Centenary Awards, where the nation’s foremost change makers will be honoured with the prestigious DTN@100 Heroes Awards.

The 100-year-old newspaper is marking a century of journalism with a grand event holding on September 3, 2026 at the ThisDay Dome, Central Area, Abuja to recognize individuals and institutions that have shaped Nigeria’s story in governance, security, economy, innovation and service to humanity.

Leading the honourees is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who will receive the DTN@100 Statesman Award for his decades of public service and role in national cohesion.

Also on the roll of honour is the Founder/Chairman of the Zenith Bank, Jim Ovia who gets the DTN@ 100 Change Maker of the Century while the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof Mentawe Yilwatda , who bags the DTN@100 Political Leadership Award.

State Governors also make the list. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma wins the DTN@100 Good Governance Award; Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gets the DTN@100 Mega City Transformation Award, while the Niger State Governor Umaru Bago is honoured with the DTN@100 Agricultural Revolution Award for his drive on food security and mechanized farming.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule receives the DTN@100 Outstanding Governor (North Central) while Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal gets the DTN@100 Outstanding Governor (North West).

Joining them are two of the South- East and South- South’s brightest performers. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah clinches the DTN@100 Innovation and Infrastructure Award for his bold investments in smart governance, security and urban renewal. Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno receives the DTN@100 People-Centered Governance Award for his ARISE Agenda focused on job creation, rural development and social welfare.

From the economic front, the richest man in Africa and President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, will be decorated with the DTN@100 Industrialist of the Century Award for his contributions to job creation and industrialization.

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, former President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) takes home the DTN@100 Pan-African Development Award.

Traditional institutions are also celebrated and honoured for their roles in the society. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, will receive the DTN@100 Royal Icon Award for his role in cultural renaissance and youth empowerment.

In the security sector, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited will be honoured with the DTN@100 Change Maker of the Century Award winner for its critical role in protecting Nigeria’s oil and gas assets and restoring stability to the Niger Delta.

Other awardees from different walks of life, including banking, health, education, media, sports and philanthropy are also expected to receive the prestigious awards during the epoch making event.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Chairman of Folio Media Group and Publisher of Daily Times, Mr Fidelis Anosike, said the DTN@100 Heroes Awards are designed to celebrate Nigerians who have made sacrifices and delivered impact in the last 100 years.

He said, “For 100 years, Daily Times has told the Nigerian story. Today we honour those writing the next chapter. These are men and women who chose service over self, and results over rhetoric.”

The Centenary Gala, scheduled for the International Conference Centre, Abuja, is expected to draw cabinet members, governors, captains of industry, traditional rulers, diplomats and media leaders.

According to the organisers, the night will feature tributes, documentaries and the official unveiling of the DTN@100 Commemorative Book chronicling Nigeria’s journey through the eyes of Daily Times.

With a theme titled, “A Century of Truth, A Future of Impact,” the DTN@100 Awards aim to set the tone for the next century of nation-building.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has ordered sanctions against the contractor handling the Summit Junction to Head Bridge section of the Benin Onitsha Expressway, including the immediate arrest of the contractor over alleged failure to fulfil contractual obligations despite receiving payment.

Umahi gave the directive on Thursday while inspecting the ongoing 17.5 kilometre access road to the Second Niger Bridge.

The Minister commended the Chinese firm executing the access road for the pace of work and urged it to sustain the momentum, assuring the contractor of continued government funding to ensure timely completion.

During the inspection, Umahi also raised concerns over the vandalisation of the old Niger Bridge, particularly the removal of bolts and nuts from the structure.

He said the Federal Government had commenced the replacement of the vandalised components and would also resurface the bridge with asphalt as part of efforts to restore and strengthen the structure.

According to the Minister, the rehabilitation work on the old Niger Bridge will be carried out at night to minimise disruption to motorists and other road users. He disclosed that the bridge would be temporarily closed during the construction exercise.

Umahi further announced plans to install closed circuit television cameras and solar powered lighting systems on the bridge to strengthen surveillance, improve security and deter further vandalism.

The Minister also expressed concern over deteriorating portions of the Benin Agbor Road, accusing concessionaires of frustrating Federal Government efforts to rehabilitate failed sections of the highway.

He said the government was considering alternative measures to address the affected portions and restore smooth movement along the important corridor.

Umahi warned that the continued removal of critical components from the old Niger Bridge posed a serious threat to public safety, stressing that urgent intervention was necessary to prevent further deterioration of the structure.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to complete critical road infrastructure across the country and ensure that contractors adhere strictly to the terms of their contractual agreements.

Nigeria’s external reserves have risen to $53.2 billion, marking their highest level in nearly 18 years as stronger crude oil earnings and increased foreign exchange inflows continue to strengthen the country’s external position.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the reserves stood at $53.2 billion as of August 26, 2026, exceeding the apex bank’s projected year end target of $51.04 billion.

The latest figure is also estimated to provide more than 12 months of import cover, strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to meet its external obligations while providing additional support for foreign exchange liquidity and the stability of the naira.

Further analysis of the CBN data showed that the liquid component of the reserves stood at approximately $52.7 billion.

The continued accumulation of foreign reserves has been attributed to stronger foreign exchange inflows and improving conditions in the country’s external sector.

Nigeria has also benefited from higher international crude oil prices. Brent crude traded at about $87 per barrel on Wednesday, significantly above the $64.85 benchmark price adopted in the 2026 federal budget.

The higher crude price is expected to improve government oil revenues and increase foreign exchange earnings, creating additional room for reserve accumulation and potentially supporting naira stability.

The CBN had previously identified stronger oil earnings, ongoing foreign exchange market reforms and improved external capital inflows as key factors expected to drive reserve growth in 2026.

The latest increase extends a steady upward trend recorded over recent months. CBN data showed that Nigeria’s reserves opened June at $49.80 billion before crossing the $50 billion mark on June 5, when they reached $50.12 billion.

The reserves subsequently climbed to $50.81 billion by June 15 and reached approximately $51.9 billion on July 31, before rising further to the current level.

The sustained growth in external reserves strengthens the CBN’s capacity to provide liquidity to the foreign exchange market, respond to external pressures and meet Nigeria’s international financial obligations.

The development also signals an improvement in Nigeria’s external liquidity position, although the sustainability of the reserve build up will continue to depend on crude oil earnings, foreign exchange inflows and broader economic conditions.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abuja Chapter, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, joined actors and practitioners across Hollywood and other parts of the world in celebrating Actors International Day, with a colourful and impactful programme designed to celebrate the actor, promote professional development, and strengthen solidarity within Nigeria’s creative industry.

The celebration, held in Abuja, brought together actors, filmmakers, musicians, producers, directors and other stakeholders in the entertainment industry. The occasion was marked by sports, music, dance, entertainment, inspiring speeches and a strong call for greater commitment to the acting profession.

One of the major highlights of the celebration was the Mayor’s Cup novelty football match between the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and the Actors Guild of Nigeria. In a highly entertaining encounter, the AGN team emerged victorious with a convincing 3–1 victory over PMAN, adding a competitive but friendly dimension to the celebration.

Music was also central to the festivities, with captivating performances from actor-musicians Mercy Nnochiri, popularly known as Youngest Mama, and Juliet, popularly known as Jesus Mopol. Their performances further demonstrated the versatility of Nigerian actors and the multifaceted talents that exist within the creative community.

Another major attraction was a superlative dance drama performed by members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abuja Chapter. The production, written by Dr. Tola Balogun and co-directed by Kayode Aiyegbusi and Tola Balogun, used dance, drama and theatrical expression to communicate important messages about the challenges, responsibilities and aspirations of the Nigerian actor.

Beyond the entertainment, the event provided a platform for meaningful conversations about professionalism, character, capacity building, collaboration and the welfare of actors.

Speaking at the occasion, Julian Uchendu, an Abuja-based producer, urged actors to take their profession seriously and remain focused on their careers. She encouraged practitioners to develop confidence in their abilities, stressing that an actor’s belief in himself or herself is an important foundation for attaining stardom.

She further emphasised the importance of character and professional discipline, noting that “character excels and an actor faster.” She also made the memorable observation that “passion without character is delusional,” reminding actors that talent and passion must be supported by integrity, discipline and the right professional attitude.

Also speaking at the event, Holy Steve Ogbuefi, Chairman of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Abuja Chapter, congratulated the Actors Guild of Nigeria on the celebration of Actors International Day. He commended the Mayor of the AGN Abuja Chapter for her efforts and contributions towards impacting the lives and careers of members.

Ogbuefi also stressed the need for stronger partnerships between actors and directors, noting that both professionals play critical roles in the growth and development of the Nigerian film industry. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reversed its ban on Bolt and other e-hailing services operating at airports across the country following widespread criticism over the cost of airport transportation.

FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs, Henry Agbebire, announced the reversal in a statement issued on Thursday.

The development followed controversy surrounding the authority’s decision to restrict e-hailing services and introduce the Airport Car Hire Rank Management System (ACHRAM) at its airports.

The policy attracted public criticism after a passenger, in a video that went viral on X, alleged that a car hire service under the new arrangement was priced at N30,000 for a journey that would ordinarily cost about N8,000.

The incident triggered concerns over rising transportation costs for passengers using Nigerian airports and intensified calls for FAAN to reconsider the restrictions on e-hailing operators.

FAAN, however, clarified that ACHRAM was not designed as an e-hailing platform and was not intended to replace or monopolise services provided by operators such as Bolt and Uber.

According to the airport authority, discussions with Bolt subsequently produced an operational framework acceptable to both parties.

“The Authority is therefore pleased to announce that, following constructive engagements, FAAN and Bolt have reached an agreeable operational framework, and Bolt is cleared to commence its services at FAAN-managed airports immediately,” Agbebire said.

The reversal means Bolt drivers can resume operations at FAAN-managed airports under the agreed framework, providing passengers with an additional transportation option.

The authority’s clarification is also expected to ease concerns that the implementation of ACHRAM would effectively limit competition and leave passengers dependent on higher-priced airport car hire services.

The controversy has nevertheless placed renewed attention on the need for affordable, transparent and competitive transportation services at Nigerian airports, particularly amid concerns over the cost of accessing and leaving major aviation terminals.

Liverpool are closing in on a major move for Paris Saint Germain winger Bradley Barcola as the summer transfer window enters its decisive stages, while Nottingham Forest have completed a club record deal for Chelsea striker Liam Delap.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola has gathered pace after months of negotiations, with the France international remaining a priority target as manager Andoni Iraola looks to strengthen his attacking options.

Recent reports indicate that Liverpool have reached an agreement in principle with Barcola over personal terms, although negotiations with Paris Saint Germain have remained more complicated. The French champions have demanded a substantial fee for the 23 year old winger.

Liverpool have previously been reported to have made an opening offer of about €115 million, equivalent to approximately £98.5 million, for Barcola. Further talks between the clubs have continued as the Reds attempt to finalise the transfer.

Barcola has emerged as Liverpool’s leading target for a wide attacking position following significant changes to the club’s forward line. The winger’s pace, versatility and ability to operate from the left have made him an attractive option for the Premier League champions.

Liverpool have also explored alternatives, including Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh, after a reported £50 million bid for the Gambian was rejected. However, Barcola remains the club’s preferred target.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Liam Delap from Chelsea in a club record deal worth up to £50 million.

The transfer is understood to comprise an initial £45 million fee plus a further £5 million in potential add ons. Delap has signed a five year contract with Forest.

The 23 year old striker joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town last summer for £30 million but struggled to establish himself, scoring just two goals in 41 appearances for the London club, according to Sky Sports. Chelsea could therefore make a profit of up to £20 million from his departure.

Delap becomes Forest’s most expensive signing, surpassing the previous club record for Omari Hutchinson. He is expected to provide additional attacking options for Oliver Glasner alongside Chris Wood and Igor Jesus.

The move also represents a fresh opportunity for Delap after he was reportedly left out of Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso’s plans for the new season.

Forest had moved quickly to secure the England international after talks with his representatives began earlier in the week, beating competition from other Premier League clubs interested in the striker.

With the transfer window approaching its September 1 deadline, Liverpool’s efforts to complete the Barcola deal and Forest’s record investment in Delap underline the increasingly intense activity among Premier League clubs as they finalise their squads for the new campaign.
