Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has ordered the immediate fumigation of the river in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area, following concerns over possible contamination after the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in the coastal community.

The governor also directed the Ministries of Health and Environment to distribute nose masks and essential health kits to residents to minimise their exposure to potential health hazards arising from the incident.

The emergency measures followed complaints from residents about a strong stench emanating from the river, which serves as a major source of drinking water, cooking water, fishing and other daily activities for people in Igbokoda and neighbouring communities.

The ill-fated NAF ATR-42 aircraft reportedly crashed into a swamp near the Nigerian Air Force Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda last Monday while undertaking a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos.

According to the report, all 25 people on board, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers, died in the incident. The aircraft subsequently sank into the swamp, prompting search-and-recovery operations involving military personnel and other emergency responders.

Efforts to recover the wreckage and the victims’ bodies have reportedly faced significant challenges because of the difficult swampy terrain. Excavation activities are continuing, with additional machinery being deployed to assist in retrieving the remaining parts of the aircraft.

Residents Raise Alarm Over Water Contamination

The traditional ruler of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, expressed concern over the possible contamination of the river, warning that the situation had disrupted the daily lives of residents who depend on it for their survival.

The monarch explained that the river was the community’s primary source of water for drinking, cooking and other domestic purposes, adding that residents were facing increased hardship because of the absence of an alternative water supply.

He also raised concerns about the unpleasant odour coming from the river following the crash and the ongoing recovery operations.

According to him, the suspected pollution poses a serious public health concern that requires urgent government intervention to protect the affected population.

Government Moves to Provide Safe Drinking Water

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, disclosed that Governor Aiyedatiwa had instructed the state Ministries of Health and Environment to commence extensive fumigation of the affected river.

Ajanaku explained that the intervention was designed to reduce potential health risks and prevent a possible disease outbreak in the community.

He added that the governor had directed the Ilaje Local Government Area to make arrangements for water tankers to supply potable water to residents continuously if assessments established that the river was severely polluted and unsafe for use.

The commissioner noted that the temporary water distribution arrangement would remain in place until a lasting solution was implemented to address the situation.

The government also directed the relevant ministries to distribute nose masks and other essential health materials to residents as part of efforts to protect them from possible environmental hazards.

Ondo Government Pledges Support for Recovery Operations

Beyond the public health intervention, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force in its ongoing efforts to evacuate the aircraft wreckage and recover the victims.

Ajanaku said the administration remained concerned about the safety and welfare of residents in the affected community and would continue to take necessary measures to address the challenges arising from the crash.

The incident has raised concerns about environmental safety in Igbokoda, particularly because of the community’s dependence on the affected river for its livelihood and essential domestic needs.

As recovery operations continue, the immediate priorities remain the safe retrieval of the aircraft wreckage, the protection of residents from potential health risks and the provision of reliable drinking water while the condition of the river is assessed.

The state government’s intervention is expected to provide temporary relief to affected residents as authorities work towards a lasting solution to the suspected water contamination.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to inaugurate the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Presidential Campaign Council on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as the ruling party begins preparations for the next presidential election.

The inauguration is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday evening, following the party’s release of an updated list of members of the Presidential Campaign Council.

According to Morka, attendance at the inauguration will be restricted to the leadership of the council’s various directorates.

The revised list features several prominent political figures, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo; and former Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola.

Tinubu will serve as chairman of the campaign council, while Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, have been designated as the first and second vice chairmen, respectively.

Former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, has been appointed Director-General of the campaign council, with Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, named as secretary.

Other key figures on the council include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who are among those appointed as vice chairmen.

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu have also been assigned deputy director-general positions.

Former Edo State Governor and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, will oversee mobilisation as deputy director-general, while the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, will supervise administration.

Ibrahim Masari has been assigned responsibility for logistics and operations, while former Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Masari will serve as deputy director-general for parliamentary mobilisation.

Minister of Works David Umahi will coordinate infrastructure mobilisation and sensitisation, while James Faleke, who represents Agege Federal Constituency, will oversee election planning, coordination and monitoring.

The APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, and the President’s Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, have been appointed assistant secretaries.

Governors, Political Leaders Assigned State Roles

The campaign council’s structure also provides for coordinators across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, with several serving and former governors expected to play important roles in their respective states.

Among the designated state coordinators are Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Faleke will serve as deputy director-general of the Directorate of Election Planning, Coordination, Monitoring and Mobilisation, with Stella Okotete and Abdullahi Garba Ramat appointed as secretaries.

Aminu Masari will head the Directorate of General Logistics and Operations as deputy director-general, supported by Adeniyi Tinubu and Yakub Bashir Bello, while Professor Kabiru Isa will serve as secretary.

Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Betta Edu has been appointed to lead the Women Mobilisation Directorate, a role expected to focus on strengthening women’s participation and engagement in the campaign.

The composition of the council reflects the APC’s effort to bring together party leaders, elected officials, political allies and experienced campaign administrators under a coordinated structure.

In the vast and often lonely landscape of African literature, where many young writers struggle to find their voice, find a platform, and find the consistency to keep writing, there are few lights that shine as steadily and as sincerely as STRIDA.

STRIDA – *Striking Ideas (Since 2018)* – is more than an institute. It is a movement, a workshop, a home, and a training ground for the African mind that dares to write.

When I, Quazeem Halimot Bukola ,first encountered STRIDA – that was in 2023, what struck me was not just the name, but the philosophy behind the name. To strike an idea is not just to have it; it is to make it land, to make it count, to make it memorable. For eight years now, from 2018 to this glorious 8th Anniversary in 2026, STRIDA has been doing exactly that. As boldly written on your anniversary banner: _”…guiding you to striking confidence in academic and creative writing!”_ That sentence alone captures the entire essence of what you do.

That’s why to me, STRIDA was founded on a simple but powerful conviction: that young African writers do not lack talent; they lack guidance, consistency, and opportunity. In a continent overflowing with stories, our youth often write one poem and stop, write one article and hide it in their drafts, write one beautiful thought and lose it to self-doubt. STRIDA came to break that cycle.

Your work has been to encourage consistency. To tell the young writer in Freetown, in Lagos, in Nairobi, in Accra – keep writing. Write today, write tomorrow. Develop the skill. Hone the craft. You have taught us that writing is not a miracle; it is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

And you have not just taught – you have provided the platform. In the last eight years, STRIDA has published several hundred articles, poems, short stories, academic essays, and other creative write-ups for different writers across Africa. You have become a bridge between the notebook and the world. For many young authors, STRIDA was their first byline, their first public validation, their first time seeing their name in print under a title they bled to create. That is not a small thing. That first publication is the spark that keeps a writer alive.

What makes STRIDA unique is your balance. As your 8th Anniversary theme so aptly says: *”ACADEMIC AND CREATIVE WRITING FOR EMPLOYABILITY.”* You understand that writing in Africa must be both art and skill. We must write to express our soul – our poems, our folklore, our pain – but we must also write to survive, to get jobs, to write academic papers, proposals, and compelling professional content. You have merged these two worlds. Through your trainings, your online sessions, and through Ajakaye STRIDA TV on YouTube, you have democratized writing education. You have told every young person that striking confidence in writing is employability. It is power.

Same vision, bigger impact. That handwritten note on your anniversary poster is true. You started with a vision in 2018 and eight years later, the impact is continental. You are raising a generation of African writers who are not just writing for likes, but writing for legacy.

And now, allow me to become personal. Allow me to drop the collective voice and speak as Quazeem Halimot Bukola, a writer whose pen found a home in your hands.

If STRIDA is a mother to many writers, I am one of her proudest children. You did not just encourage me from afar; you published me. You gave my thoughts wings.

You published *“Screw it, Let’s Do It”* – my didactic poem. That poem was a call to action to myself and to my generation to stop procrastinating and to dare despite fear. Many platforms would have called it too blunt, too motivational. But STRIDA saw its teaching value. You understood that literature must also teach. You gave that didactic voice a platform.

You published *“African Teacher”* – my ode. In a time when teachers in Africa are often mocked and underpaid, I wanted to write an ode to celebrate them as nation-builders. STRIDA celebrated it with me. You helped me honor the noble profession that raised me.

You published *“The Black Diamond in the Red Sea”* – my elegiac poetry. That was one of my most emotional pieces, a lamentation, a mourning wrapped in metaphor. Elegies require sensitivity to publish, and you handled it with such literary respect.

And you published *“Plight of the Greenhouse”* – my protest and social commentary. In that piece I tried to be the voice of our dying environment, the voice of our choked planet. It was political, it was angry, it was uncomfortable. Many would shy away. But STRIDA, true to your name, is not afraid of striking ideas, even when they protest. You gave my activism a page.

For these four, and for all the other times you have believed in me, I say a very big thank you. Abundantly.

Thank you for seeing a young writer from Lagos state ,Nigeria and saying, your voice matters. Thank you for not asking how many followers I have before publishing me. Thank you for editing without erasing my voice. Thank you for your consistency when I was still learning consistency.

On behalf of all the young writers across Africa whose poems you have polished, whose articles you have published, whose confidence you have built – I say thank you.

Thank you to the founder, Ajakaye, and the entire STRIDA team, the editors, the graphic designers, the managers of STRIDA TV, the mentors who work behind the scenes. Your labor is not in vain. Every writer you help today is a library you are building for tomorrow.

They include Ahmadu Fintiri for Adamawa, Umo Eno for Akwa Ibom, Chukwuma Soludo for Anambra, Babagana Zulum for Borno, Sheriff Oborevwori for Delta, Hope Uzodimma for Imo, Abba Kabir Yusuf for Kano, Dapo Abiodun for Ogun, Ademola Adeleke for Osun, and Nyesom Wike for Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.

Dauda Lawal has also been listed as coordinator for Zamfara State.

Former Governors, Party Leaders Named as Advisers

The council includes former governors and senior party figures as advisers.

Those named include former APC national chairmen Adebisi Akande and Abdullahi Adamu; former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun; former Osun State Governor Iyiola Omisore; Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo; Senator George Akume; former Ogun State Governor Segun Osoba; and Wale Edun.

Obafemi George has been appointed adviser on media.

Election Planning and Monitoring Directorate

The Directorate of Election Planning, Coordination, Monitoring and Mobilisation, established ahead of the 2027 general election, will be led by James Faleke as deputy director-general.

Stella Okotete and Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat will serve as secretary I and secretary II, respectively, while Audu Maikori has also been named a secretary.

Other members of the directorate include Soares Omotola, Bashir Dabo, Sheriff Mohammed Usman, Jibrin Bancir, Ayoola Peter Olajolo, Abubakar Sadiq Sada and Princess Folasade Ogunbiyi.

General Logistics and Operations Directorate

In the Directorate of General Logistics and Operations, Ibrahim Kabir Masari has been appointed deputy director-general, with Adeniyi Tinubu and Barr. Yakub Bashir Bello serving as deputies. Prof. Kabiru Isa has been named secretary.

Other members include Ekene Nwokoro Ogbonaya, Prof. Vincent Weli, Ambassador Olusola Iji, Amina Bello, Ahmed Zibiri, Annabel Isenyo, Terrence Kuanum, Prof. Latif Babatunde Ayeleru, Amarachi Ejike, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa and Prof. Shuaibu Abdullahi.

Additional members are Senator Bello Tukur, Senator Adegbonmire Adeniyi Ayodele, Taiwo Adebowale, Sunusi Muhammad Abdullahi, Wasiu Olaomo Ayeola, Chief Isaac Ijwo, Garba Gololo Mohammed, Biodun Ogunbi, Ayuba Ganiyu Adele, High Chief Edem Duke, Yusuf Capt. Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed amazement at the level of infrastructure development she says she has witnessed across various states in the country, particularly in road rehabilitation and the construction of public facilities by state governments.

The First Lady made the remarks during an interview with News Central TV at a grassroots rally held in the North-Central region to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Speaking during the interview, Oluremi Tinubu reflected on her eight-year tenure in the Senate, noting that her recent travels across different communities had exposed her to infrastructure projects that she found particularly striking.

According to her, the scale of road repairs and other development initiatives undertaken by governors had caught her attention.

“I have been in the Senate for eight years. This is the first time I will see governors fixing roads, building a lot of infrastructure,” she said.

Her comments have drawn attention to the ongoing conversation about infrastructure delivery and the performance of state governments under the current administration.

Across Nigeria, road construction, rehabilitation and the provision of public facilities remain important aspects of governance. Well-maintained roads can improve transportation, ease the movement of goods and services, and support economic activities, while investments in public facilities can improve access to essential services.

However, the level and pace of development vary from one state to another, depending on available resources, budgetary priorities, federal allocations and the policies adopted by individual governors.

While the First Lady’s remarks were based on her observations during visits to different parts of the country, the overall success of infrastructure programmes is generally assessed through project quality, timely completion, geographical distribution and the tangible benefits delivered to residents.

Her statement comes amid continued political discussions surrounding the Tinubu administration’s development agenda and efforts to secure public support ahead of future electoral contests.

The interview was conducted during a grassroots mobilisation rally organised in support of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima.
