The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced large-scale reconstruction work at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, and has advised travellers to arrive well ahead of their departure times to avoid disruptions.
In a travel advisory issued on Friday, FAAN said the project, which involves extensive rehabilitation of Terminal One, will affect normal airport operations. Passengers have been urged to comply with traffic instructions, use designated parking spaces, and limit visits to the airport strictly to those travelling.
The reconstruction follows the approval of over N900 billion for aviation projects by the Federal Executive Council on August 1, with the Lagos terminal upgrade as a flagship component. The rehabilitation, valued at N712.25 billion, will strip the terminal down to its structural base and rebuild its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The project is expected to take 22 months to complete.
Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, described the works as part of a broader push to modernise Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.
FAAN reassured travellers of its commitment to minimising inconvenience during the reconstruction.
“We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work to deliver a world-class facility,” the authority stated.
The Lagos airport remains Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub, handling the highest volume of both domestic and international flights in the country.
