A former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship candidate in Yewa North Local Government, Kehinde Akinde, has announced his resignation from the party, citing deep dissatisfaction with its leadership at the national, state, and local levels.
Akinde, who contested the 2021 council elections under the PDP, disclosed his decision in a statement on Wednesday, describing the once “noble party” as now “a shadow of itself.”
“From the manipulative division at the national level to injustices suffered by loyal members at the grassroots, one is left with no option but to seek a way forward out of this quagmire,” he said.
He explained that the decision was not taken in haste but came after “critical analysis and wide consultation with our supporters at home and in the diaspora.”
While Akinde did not reveal his next political destination, he suggested that his future moves would be guided by his values and those of his supporters. “Our next political move will be determined by God’s directive in line with our philosophical value of good governance for the betterment of our people,” he stated.
His resignation comes amid a series of high-profile defections that have unsettled the Ogun State chapter of the PDP. In July, former state chairman Dr. Sikirulahi Ogundele and the party’s 2023 deputy governorship candidate, Abdulkabir Akinlade, left the party with hundreds of supporters to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a collapse of confidence in the PDP’s leadership structure.
The wave of exits underscores ongoing internal crises in the party, marked by leadership tussles and accusations of unfair treatment of longstanding members.
