Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, says the arrest of separatist agitator Simon Ekpa in Finland has significantly reduced insecurity in the South East.
Ekpa, a self-styled Biafra campaigner, was arrested in November 2024 on terrorism-related charges. Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television Thursday night, Musa confirmed he is still on trial in Finland.
“Since he was arrested, the South East is getting better,” Musa said, adding that security forces are now targeting his lieutenants across Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Abia states.
The CDS vowed that no militant leader would be spared:
“We’re going to go after them wherever they are, and whatever it takes, we’ll bring them.”
Musa also highlighted recent gains against terrorism nationwide, pointing to the capture of Ansaru commanders as evidence of improved military coordination.
On regional security, he announced that Nigeria will, for the first time, host an African Chiefs of Defence Staff Conference starting Monday. The gathering, he said, will enable continental military leaders to share strategies in the fight against terrorism spreading across Africa.
“No nation is an island,” Musa stressed. “From Mozambique to Ghana, Burkina Faso to Mali, the threats are real. It’s important we come together as brothers and sisters to find solutions.”
