The Ekiti State Government has announced plans to host the maiden edition of the Ekiti International Theatre Festival, aimed at promoting tourism, showcasing local talents, and building a global image for the state.
The Festival Director, Prof. Rasaki Ojo Bakare, disclosed this on Monday during a sensitisation programme in Ado Ekiti. He said the event, scheduled to hold between August 20 and 25, 2025, at the Obafemi Awolowo Civic Centre, is a collaboration between the Duke of Shomolu Foundation and the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy.
According to Bakare, the festival is expected to attract over 50,000 visitors to the state and will feature theatrical performances, cultural exhibitions, and guided tours of Ekiti’s tourist sites.
“We want to use theatre to attract tourists to the state. Through this festival, we are also contributing to the making of a global image for our state,” Bakare said. “Our intention is to keep this franchise in Ekiti for the next five years, and all activities are free of charge.”
Highlighting the festival’s structure, Bakare, a Professor of Dance and Performing Arts, explained that each of the state’s 16 local government areas will present a theatrical performance, with the best four earning prizes and awards. The initiative, he noted, is designed to nurture and mentor young talents for opportunities in the creative industry.
In addition, the festival will feature three command performances dedicated to Nigeria’s historical figures:
- Ladi Kwali (written and directed by Prof. Rasaki Ojo Bakare),
- Sardauna (written and directed by Prof. Hammed Yerimah), and
- Kashimawo (written and directed by Prof. Bakare).
“These historical plays are meant to celebrate national icons, teach morals, and educate young people on Nigeria’s history,” he added.
Prominent traditional rulers, captains of industry, artists, and stakeholders in the creative sector are also expected to grace the festival.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji has consistently emphasized integrating arts and culture into Ekiti’s economic development, with the theatre festival forming a key part of that agenda.
