The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared former Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Christopher Enweremadu, wanted over alleged involvement in criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, stealing, and money laundering.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday and signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the commission urged anyone with useful information on Enweremadu’s whereabouts to contact its offices across the country. His last known address was listed as the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Umuahia, Abia State.
“The public is hereby notified that Christopher Enweremadu, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the EFCC in an alleged case of criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, stealing and money laundering,” the statement read.
Enweremadu served under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and has previously been linked to investigations concerning the management of funds allocated to Abia’s 17 local government councils.
In December 2024, a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja ordered a probe into allocations to the councils between 2019 and 2023. The court also directed the EFCC to seize the international passports of Enweremadu and two other senior state officials — Erondu Uchenna Erondu, a former aide to Ikpeazu, and Deaconess Joy Nwanju, a permanent secretary in the ministry.
The case stemmed from an activist’s petition alleging that billions of naira received by the state for local governments were mismanaged during the officials’ tenure.
The EFCC did not disclose further details about the specific transactions linked to Wednesday’s wanted notice.
The commission, in recent months, has stepped up its clampdown on politically exposed persons. Only last month, it declared Abdullahi Bashir Haske, an Adamawa-born businessman and associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, wanted for alleged conspiracy and money laundering.
